Streaming

I am a Twitch Affiliated Variety Streamer who started streaming in 2016.

I currently stream video games from my PS4 on Saturdays (12-3pm EST) and from my Mac on Thursdays (6-8/9pm EST). I’m pondering adding some intermittent table top RPG action on Fridays…but I’m still working out the logistics. Because academics never really have time off, my schedule can be a bit erratic–I have to go to conferences and give keynotes randomly. I post my weekly and monthly schedule on my Twitch Channel, so check it out. I may not be able to stream every Saturday/Thursday, but if I have to miss a day, I’ll try to make it up day if at all possible.

What is the Academic Foxhole all about?

People often say the internet is full of the worst folks–mean and harsh. But that isn’t my experience with the places in the internet I frequent and that isn’t the space I want to build. My vision for the Academic Foxhole is for it to be a thoughtful and intentional space that is welcoming and affirming of people from all walks of life. No racism, sexism, trans or homophobia, or any other sort of bigotry in the Foxhole. No hate speech. Just don’t be a jerk, y’know? Other people on the internet are human beings, too. The Academic Foxhole is a place where people are kind and respectful.

But most centrally, I want the Academic Foxhole where the Battle Buddies and I can hang out and overthink the games we’re playing and philosophize and about anything and everything. Talk about what makes a good GM in a sandbox game? Let’s talk about it! What do we think about the Templar/Mage conflict in the Dragon Age universe? Let’s do it! What do we think about the role of failure in games? I take my media pretty seriously and love just digging into it–it is my favorite hobby! You want to talk deeply about media stuff? Me too! This is a place for you!  And after the stream, you can continue the discussion on my Discord.

Everyone is pretty friendly and we also have some goofballs. Come and hangout with us!

So what am I streaming?

I try always to do blind playthroughs of games so we can experience honest first reactions. I love the discovery together, so we try to be helpful, but not give spoilers. Since I like to overanalyze games, I tend to play things that lend themselves to that sort of thing. So expect lots of RPGs, Adventure games, Visual Novels, and other narrative heavy games.

Currently, my PS4 Saturday stream is Dragon Age: Inquisition. And I’ve been playing that for months…that is one long game! Maybe some time soon it’ll be over? I feel like like I’m heading towards the end game…still have DLC to do and a few more zones. But I think we are getting close to the end. I’m playing a Dalish Elf Rogue and when I play I try to explore the world and make choices from the point of view of that character. He’s an outsider and skeptical of Ferelden/Orlesian society. He doesn’t believe in the Maker and so being the head of the Inquisition is a bit…strange for him. He’s not a bad person…but he is an Assassin, so he can be quite…pragmatic. He is currently in a romance with Dorian…another outsider.

Because my Saturday stream is such a long never-ending adventure, currently my Mac Thursday stream is full of shorter indie and indie adjacent games. I’m trying to start my Thursday streams with a song on my banjo (to force myself to practice!)…and then onto the games. I’ve played all the IGF Excellence in Narrative Nominees, I’ve played Firewatch. I try to play some Visual Novels as part of my Visual Novel Back Seat Drive-In Theater…where you’ll help me make all the choices. Maybe once I’m done with Dragon Age: Inquisition, I’ll do some shorter games on the PS4 and some longer games on the Mac. Let’s see!

My more recent VODs are available on Twitch, but you can get a mostly full archive on my YouTube channel.
